1985 was the first Bathurst run under the new Group A regulations. Johnson had already finished 2nd place in the 1985 ATCC, but was struggling with the endurance rounds. For the Bathurst race he partnered with Larry Perkins, who had recently had a dispute with the HDT team. Of the 51 starters there were only 4 Fords, the lowest turnout since 1966.Johnson had the 6th fastest time in qualifying, and in Hardies Heros he was able to put his Mustang into 3rd for the start of the race. After a frantic start Johnson found himself in 5th place, but by lap 16 the car was already in trouble, splitting an oil cooler.
